Twenty years ago, the Kremlin lost its own Battle of Stalingrad:  Communist Poland formally legalized Solidarity, a labor union that truly was a labor union.  In 1943, after the Battle of Stalingrad, it was certain that Hitler could not “win” the war (i.e. he could not achieve the sort of military advantage which would force the democracies to make peace with him.)  The Red Army, growing stronger by the day, would fight the bulk of the German land forces until the overwhelming material superiority of America would lead to the absolute defeat of the Axis.  There would be respite for the Wehrmacht, like the destruction of the Soviet Sixth Army in the Spring of 1943, but the Germans could do nothing to prevent the inevitable conquest of their country.

After a high tide, much like a national election, there is a period where the sand is smooth from the effects of the pounding surf on the sand similar to a ‘presidential election honeymoon.‘  Soon after the surf recedes Gods’ little creatures return to their habitat, or in the case of politicians ‘scene of the crime’ resuming their instinctual modes of existence.  Predicated upon the location God’s creatures find themselves in this food chain naturally dictates the level of preoccupation and energy they will expend on protecting ‘their turf’ on the beach.

It is a da*n good thing for the press that I am an ardent supporter of a free press.  If I were not, being as incensed and livid at what passes for a “press” in this country as I am right now, I would probably be calling for their regulation to ensure that they actually cover things that are really news in their so called newscasts.  As many of you know, although many of you may not care, Sunday is the NFL Championship.  This event is either referred to as the Super Bowl (if you do not fear that the NFL will sue you for daring to use the name) or “The Big Game” (if you do fear that the NFL will sue you for daring to use the name).  The contest will pit the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Arizona Cardinals and is the focus of a great deal of coverage here in my home city of Pittsburgh.

That vast cloud of brown pollution hanging over Asia comes from wood and cattle dung being burned in millions of Third World home-fires, according to Orjan Gustafsson, a bio-geochemist from Stockholm University. Gustaffsson recently tested the smoke of the Asian brown cloud with a newly developed radiocarbon technique - and found that two-thirds of the brown cloud’s particles are organic matter, mostly wood, straw and dung.

But there is one little problem with this daily palling around with mediots these days: Emanuel now works for the White House.
