I waited until today to write you in response to your recent request for contributions as I wanted to see just how the special congressional election in New York’s 23rd District would play out. Unfortunately, it tuned out even worse than I had expected.
As a conservative Republican voter since 1968, I can honestly say that I have rarely witnessed such an embarrassing spectacle in an election! You have managed to make even John McCain’s shipwreck of a campaign look competent in comparison. It has been reported that the Republican Party spent almost $1,000,000 supporting the ridiculously embarrassing campaign of the ultra liberal “Republican” (quotation marks intentional) Dede Scozzafava. And what did you get for that investment? Let’s see:
Your candidate, after grass roots Republicans in the 23rd and a few bloggers unmasked her as a RINO, ended up having to pull out of the race during the final week of the campaign. She then proceeded to endorse the Democrat candidate and urged her supporters to do so, over 7,000 of whom did just that, costing the conservative candidate the election and electing a Democrat who’ll now be voting with Nancy Pelosi.
Nice work! You managed to lose a district that hadn’t elected a Democrat since 1852! There are lessons to be learned here. Let’s examine two options:
1. The left will tell you, “See what happens when you abandon ‘moderates’ and end up with a far right candidate?” They, of course, will want us to keep running candidates such as John McCain and Dede Scozzafava. I don’t blame them. If I were a leftwing Democrat, that’s the kind of “Republican” I’d want the GOP to run, too.
Or
2. You might want to consider seeking out genuine conservatives (such as those who whipped the Democrats in the gubernatorial races in Virginia and, of all places, New Jersey) and support them against liberal/leftwing Democrats, especially in the districts won by McCain in ’08 where Democrats eked out congressional victories.
In case you haven’t noticed, there is a growing group of Americans who are on the move. Instead of pitchforks, they have ballots in their hands. They’re chanting in Paul Revere-like fashion “Enough!”. True, it’s hard to make out exactly what they’re saying since they’re still in the distance. But before you know it, they’ll be close enough for you to see the whites of their eyes and hear their chant clearly: “Enough!” You will ignore these people at your peril. You see, either you give the people what they want and deserve – honest, principled, patriotic candidates who want to take America back to her founding principles and save our country for posterity – or you will suffer the fate of your predecessors in the Whig Party.
And it isn’t as if there were a real choice for you here. Either “we the people” will be given what we know this country needs, or you will suffer case after case of the Dede Scozzafava debacle in district after district nationwide in 2010. The “big tent” approach simply will not work. It will produce more failures such as in New York 23rd.
On the practical side of this, political experts have identified over 80 congressional districts where (even) John McCain won a majority last year, and yet have Democrat congressional “representation”. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to run genuine conservative candidates in those districts next year.
Again, the choice is yours – either repeat the Scozzafava mistake in these 80+ districts, ensuring your relegation to a status of permanent minority, or listen to the people. Barry Goldwater prophetically said in 1964 that moderation in the defense of liberty is no virtue. You, as a viable political party, can only survive if you seize the moment and stand up for our founding principles. This means you must resist the siren song of people such as Colin Powell, Peggy Noonan, and John McCain’s daughter, and instead listen to “the little people” who are intent on taking back their government from the hard left cabal in Washington which is seeking to impose a statist thugocracy on the American people.
The Republican Party was once the only thing standing between us and the loons of the far left. Glenn Beck might be too young to remember, but I recall that for decades Sen. Everett Dirksen and Rep. Bob Michel stood in the well of their respective houses and tried to warn America of the dangers to liberty posed by an ever-expanding, behemoth federal government. Over the past 20 years, the more you Beltway GOP “leaders” have retrenched and retreated, the more vulnerable we have all become to the horrible things now facing us – horrendous deficit spending which will produce hyperinflation; British-style nationalized – and rationed – health “care”; vastly weakened national security in the face of the threats from abroad; and an out-of-control border which threatens not only our national security, but our electoral process for the next 30 years, to name but a few.
If you think you can out-democrat the Democrats by playing “middle of the road” so-called “bipartisan” games, then you will continue to lose election after election and our country will be destroyed in the process. And if you think that we’ll ever again acquiesce to choosing between the lesser of two evils at the polls, then you just don’t get it.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, if you think we aren’t watching, then you aren’t listening! The choice is yours.
