'Maine's 'Sex School' Taken to Court?'
By J. Grant Swank Jr. (10/20/07)
Maine is nuts except for the pines
Portland Maine’s King Middle School Committee concluded 7 to 2 to make ‘the pill’ available to students in grades 6 through 8.
This has made international news, not exactly what the committee had envisioned. Those of us living in Maine may have become numb to this daily carnage; but others elsewhere in America are in shock.
Yet a telecast school nurse acted as if she were representing Mother Teresa in announcing the good of this vote. After all, the sexually active 6 through 8 children need protection, don’t they? And who else can play parent better than the nurse at King Middle School?
This has been stamped as legitimate by the local school board, student health center personnel and the Department of Health and Human Services.
"’It's very rare that middle schools do this,’ said Divya Mohan, a spokeswoman for the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care.”
Now Maine’s Christian Civic League’s Executive Director Michael S. Heath has set forth this message on the League’s website:
“In light of the King Middle School's recent admission that pre-teen schoolgirls were sexually active, the Christian Civic League of Maine announced today it will ask the State of Maine Office of the Attorney General to review the matter for an investigation into criminal activity.
“According to Maine law, sexual relations between adolescents is permissible, as long as both are aged fourteen or over, and the age difference is no more than 5 years.
“According to Amanda Rowe, lead nurse in Portland's school health centers, five of the 134 students who visited King Middle School's health center during the 2006-07 school year reported having sexual intercourse.
“The League is asking that concerned citizens of Maine who want to join in the filing of the request to contact the League by email. Maine citizens can send their name and address to email@cclmaine.org to be added to the petition to the Attorney General's office.
“The League is in the process of organizing concerned parents who currently have children in the Portland school district. A meeting will be announced at www.leaguerecord.com in order to decide upon additional courses of action to address this issue.
“League Executive Director Michael S. Heath said today from Washington, D.C. that he has talked with officials who work closely with the League about the issue. Heath reports that all possible avenues on the local, state, and federal level are being explored to rectify the issue.”
